When the role of citizen journalists overrated and lead to catastrophe   In last few days, Tehran, The capital of Iran has witnessed two separate events. Three days ago a quad copter flew over the no-fly zone of Tehran. As a result, the anti-aircraft guns over the central part of Tehran started to shoot against it. Whole event took around five minutes and story ended when the drone flew out of the zone. Today one of the historical buildings on downtown Tehran caught fire. The Plasco building which had been built in 1962 was at the center of one of the most crowded parts of the city. A few minutes later the building collapsed on itself, while the firefighters and first-responders were still inside the building. At this moment [...]

This is time for standing up

The world is changing. It is not a metaphor anymore. It is happening right in front of our eyes and the only reason that we may lose our sight is that this change is happening so fast. It is like a train in a station. As far as it stands still, you can see it with all the details. As soon as it starts moving details become more blur. And if it speeds up enough you may just recognize it as a shadow. When I am talking about the world in the state of change I am not just talking about Mr. Trump and unpredictability that he will bring in one of the most influential offices in the world in next few days. I am not talking about the unbelievable pace of science and technology that change of our living every day. I am not talking [...]

Part #1 What year is this? Of course it is 2016. But not for all of us. If you are living in Iran it is the year 1395. The Persian calendar is one of those things that Iranian people are very proud of that and they have a very good reason to. Persian calendar is probably most accurate calendar that currently used by a large group of people. It is actually more accurate than Christian calendar. This called the Solar Hejri Calander or Hijri Shamsi (HS) calendar. It begins on the vernal equinox as determined by astronomical calculation Each of the twelve months corresponds with a zodiac sign. The first six months have 31 days, the next five have 30 days, and the last month has 29 days in usual years but 30 days in leap years. [...]

Astronomy in Afghanistan

I wrote the following article, 4 years ago for AWB (Astronomers Without Borders) and thought that maybe still interesting for someone. —— Andrew Quilty/Oculi for Newsweek There are mountains which touched the sky.  There are deep valleys and significant landscapes. This land witnessed the rise and fall of ancient and modern empires. Thousands years of history, culture and traditions lying under the clear and beautiful sky of Afghanistan. But for decades, the smokes of guns, the shadow of war and fear covered the beauty of starry nights of this land. In the last decades, invasion of the USSR, civil wars, dark and scary regime of Taliban, shadow of horrific Osama bin Laden’s Empire of terror and international [...]

Star Wars: A Perspective from a city far far away

There has been an awakening and If you have been around during last year, it is  almost impossible that you didn’t feel that. The New Star Wars movie is going to hit theaters in less than a week and probably it is going to be the highest grossing movie in the history. There is no doubt that the “Star Wars” is a universal phenomena. There are many reasons for that. George Lucas put very well-known universal mythological elements in a fantastic and well designed setup in a galaxy far far away. So It doesn’t matter where you came from and what you look like or what language you speak, you can make a connection with this universe. But for me, Star Wars is more than a story. I lived it and it changed my life. [...]

Frank Underwood might lose his upcoming election, but he definitely already won the heart of his nation, which extended far beyond the U.S.  One of the best political drama series in recent years, not only used a good writing, directing, acting and other technical issues, but also tried  to base its narrative on the reality of the political world. No need to mention that it played an important role to change the online entertainment industry.             Like any real political story, Journalists and media played an important role in this one too, and it has already raised the question of  why almost all of the journalists who portrayed in this story are so bad at their job? We can argue about the fairness [...]

An Interview with Mark Changizi: The Vision Reveolution

منتشر شده در تاریخ ۲۱ اسفند ۱۳۹۳ | نظرتان را بنویسید

Back in 2009 I had an Interview with Mark Changizi and Jam-e-Jam daily Newspaper published it. His works are amazing and also his books are deep and fascinating. So I re posted that Interview here too.  MARK CHANGIZI is a theoretical neurobiologist aiming to grasp the ultimate foundations underlying why we think, feel and see as we do. His research focuses on “why” questions, and he has made important discoveries such as on why we see in color, why we see illusions, why we have forward-facing eyes, why the brain is structured as it is, why animals have as many limbs and fingers as they do, why the dictionary is organized as it is, why fingers get pruney when wet, and how we acquired writing, language and music. He attended the [...]

The spirit behind the scenes

۴۰۰ years ago Galileo Galilee, made his small telescope and pointed it to the sky. He saw the satellites of Jupiter, the phases of Venus, dark spots on the face of the Sun and craters on the Moon. He just reported what he saw and talked about his results. He uncovered evidence that support a heliocentric model of the world. But OBSERVATION was not safe work at that time. Science was dangerous and talking about new frontiers was sometimes repaid with the scientist’s own blood. And Galileo himself faced an inquisition trial because of what he saw. ۴۰۰ years after those dark times it seems everything has changed. Now we respect science and scientists and we invite people to observe their world. This year – the International [...]
