Andy Weir\u2019s\u00a0Artemis<\/em>\u00a0is an adventure story that happens on the moon. While the science foundation and accuracy of this book are as strong as his last blockbuster novel,\u00a0The Martian,<\/em>\u00a0the characters are suffering from lack of developments and they fall into the trap of known clich\u00e9s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Artemis <\/em>is the second major novel by\nAndy Weir. He is a professional programmer and a real geek. For a long time, he\nwas writing short science fiction stories on his weblog. Then it came The\nMartian<\/em>, and he became a supernova for science fiction community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Mars to the Moon<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

His first book, The\nMartian<\/em>, started as a series of online stories about an astronaut who left\nalone on Mars. The story was a surviving adventure on a desolate planet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Martian <\/em>follows the story of Mark\nWatney, a NASA astronaut who got injured during an emergency evacuation. His\ncrew thought he was dead and they left him on Mars. When he regains his\nconsciousness, he finds out that he is alone on a planet with limited supply\nand no way to contact and almost no hope for rescue. So, he decided that \u201cI\u2019m\ngoing to have to science the shit out of this.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andy Weir throws every possible\nproblem in the way of Mark, and he has to find a way to solve them by science.\nIn an interview<\/a>, Andy Weir\nmentioned that he actually researched, created, and answered all the problems\nvia Google search and it shows the potential of the Internet for\nself-education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Artemis is an enjoyable book and a glimpse to the\npossible future of our race on the moon. It has strong hard science foundation,\nbut it has flowed into developing characters and storytelling.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And in this way, the miracle\nhappened. In this path, Andy Weir created a story that hardcore science fiction\nfans waited for a long time. It was a reminder of the golden age of science\nfiction. A simple tale enriched with the hard science. Almost everything in\nthat book has a strong base on real science\u2014OK! Except for the first storm\nwhich never is going to happen on Mars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The science is strong with ‘Artemis’<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

This book became the phenomena\nin sci-fi stories. It was like fresh air for science lovers. And became a\ncelebration for problem-solving, and showed his audiences why real science is\nso cool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Martian, The Novel, and\nThe Movie<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

When Ridley Scott chose this\nstory for a cinematic adaptation, he gathered a group of A-list celebrities to\nportray the characters of the movie. Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Kate Mara,\nJeff Daniels, Sean Bean, Kristen Wiig were cast for this film, and it received\nvery well by audiences and critics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A self-educated author and\nspace enthusiast, now has an opportunity to take the next step and the Artemis\nis the next step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Lunar Adventure<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Artemis’ <\/em>story is taking place in the\nfirst colony of human on the moon; Artemis. The main character is a young\nfemale from the Saudi who is living on Artemis and supporting\nherself\u2014financially\u2014is doing some shady business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andy Weir continues his main\ncharacteristics of The Martian <\/em>in his new work. The story is\nstrong with real science, and almost everything that happens in the story is\nscientifically plausible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are many more characters\nin this story in comparison with Martian. <\/em>And maybe here is\nthe place that Andy Weir lost his magic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Uniform Characters in an\nEngaging Story<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Almost all the characters in\nthis story are Mark Watney. Weir tried to add diversity to his stories. A\ncharacter with Muslim origin, gays, and strong women are in play, but despite\nthis effort to represent a diverse group of people, in the end, they all follow\nthe single set of characteristics. All of them are genuinely good, all of them\nare rational, all of them can recognize bigger picture and can solve problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other issue with this story\nis very soon you can find out it came from the mind of a programmer. Everything\nis there for a purpose in the narrative. All the events, all the people, all\nthe structures are there to serve the story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first-person\nnarrative\u2014although worked flawlessly for The Martian<\/em>\u2014is not working\nwell here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Artemis<\/em> is an enjoyable book and\na glimpse to the possible future of our race on the moon. It has strong hard\nscience foundation, but it has flaws in developing characters and storytelling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the scientific accuracy\nof the story is getting five successful Apollo missions, story-wise, the\nArtemis is more like the Apollo 13 mission. It keeps you alive until the end of\nthe story, but still, it is a failure and should remind the writer that he has\na problem.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
